Highlights from the Innovation Lab Network: How Competency Based Education is Transforming Assessment and Accountability Systems in Schools

What is an effective way for schools to assess students in competency based education (CBE) that is effective and equitable?  This question was explored in the third installment of a three-part webinar series hosted by the International Association for K-12 Online Learning  (iNACOL) and the Council of Chief State School Officials (CCSSO) that took place on April 10, 2014 entitled  “How Competency Based Education is Transforming Assessment and Accountability Systems in Schools.” 

Remedial Education Reporting: How a More Common Approach Could Improve Student Success

The alarming numbers of college students who require remedial education courses continue to stir concerns within state policy, education and research circles. At least 20 to 25 percent of students at four- and two-year institutions require at least one remedial course, with the numbers reaching upwards of 60 percent at some community colleges.

 

Mapping the Nation: The Local IS Global

Mapping the Nation (Mappingthenation.net) is a new tool that allows users to see just how interconnected their individual county and state are to the rest of the world. Created as a partnership between Asia Society, Longview Foundation, and data analytics company SAS, Mapping the Nation utilizes almost one million data points to show that we are a nation built upon diversity – demographically and economically.

Common Measure for State High School Graduation Rates

For the first time in the United States, all states are reporting their four-year high school graduation rates based on a common, rigorous measure. The U.S. Department of Education released data on November 26 presenting the new rates for school year 2010-2011. The new calculation showed 26 states reporting lower graduation rates, as compared to the previous year, and 24 states with rates that were unchanged or that had increased.
