Using the Freshman On-Track Indicator to Predict Graduation in Two Urban Districts in the Midwest Region

This paper examines the ability of the freshman on-track indicator and off-track indicator to successfully predict graduation of high school freshman using student-level data collected for cohorts in two districts. The authors found the on-track indicator to be effective in predicting on-time graduation, even when controlling for student characteristics and grade 8 assessment scores. Also, students from both districts who were on track to graduate at the end of grade 9 did so on time and more than students who were off track.

Prepared in collaboration with Quill Research Associates, LLC, the brief identifies measures of student characteristics (e.g., behaviors, skills) which predict future academic and workplace success.

This brief summarizes early childhood through early postsecondary education research that identifies student skills, behaviors, and other characteristics that predict future academic and workplace success. This information can support policymakers and practitioners as they begin to develop and validate factors that identify students who are on a path to postsecondary success as early as prekindergarten and throughout their academic career.

CCRS Center Year 2 Preview

Yesterday we shared some highlights from the first year of the College and Career Readiness and Success (CCRS) Center. Today we’d like to share some of our plans for Year 2!

Over the course of our first year, we have seen three major CCRS themes emerge that will form the cornerstones of our work moving forward: multiple pathways to success, P20-W alignment, and indicators and measures of college and career readiness.

Mind the Gaps: How College Readiness Narrows Achievement Gaps in College Success

This report from ACT examines academic factors indicative of first-year college success and retention for high school students, specifically underrepresented racial/ethnic minority and low-income students. The report finds that college readiness, core curriculum, and taking additional coursework in math and science are directly related to college success. This report also discusses factors that lead to lower college success rates and presents recommendations for narrowing achievement gaps.
