The National Longitudinal Studies and other data demonstrate how students with disabilities are lagging behind their peers. Students with disabilities graduate from high school at lower rates, attend and graduate from postsecondary institutions less frequently, and achieve lower rates of competitive employment.
A group of forty states, including New York, Montana, and New Hampshire, are exploring alternatives to the General Education Development test (GED). The new changes, expected to take effect in 2014, will raise the cost of the test to $120.
A Harvard study found that just 16 percent of Los Angeles Unified School District’s (LAUSD) Class of 2011 passed the classes needed to attend California's public universities, an indicator of the challenges facing the district as it makes rigorous college-prep courses a requirement for graduation. Researchers tracked LAUSD’s Class of 2011 from the time students entered ninth grade, creating a snapshot of how many graduated four years later and how many completed the A-G curriculum.

A new National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) report finds that 78% of high school students, or about 1.3 million students, finished ‘on time’ in 2010. According to Public School Graduates and Dropouts from the Common Core of Data: School Year 2009–10, this is the nation’s highest high school graduation rate since 1976.
