Career and Technical Education in the Balance: An Analysis of High School Persistence, Academic Achievement, and Postsecondary Destinations

This study explored the benefits of career and technical education. The author examined dropout rates, academic achievement, and postsecondary outcomes. The four groups consisted of (1) academic concentrators, (2) CTE concentrators, (3) dual concentrators, and (4) neither academic nor CTE concentrators. The study found that academic concentrators had the highest 1992 achievement scores in reading, mathematics, science, and history, and CTE students scored the lowest.

This report describes what states are doing to align CTE and CCSS, highlights strategies, and identifies common challenges and barriers to alignment.

Smoothing the Transition to College? The Effect of Tech-Prep Programs on Educational Attainment

This study used data from the 1997 National Longitudinal Survey of Youth. The study analysis focused on over 7,750 respondents over age 18 to
analyze their decisions about labor force participation and post-secondary education after high school. Results indicated that on average, Tech-Prep
had positive effects on high school completion and and enrollment in two-year colleges and negative effects on four-year college enrollment. 

Transition From High School to College and Work for Tech Prep Participants in Eight Selected Consortia

This 4-year longitudinal study evaluates the experiences of high school graduates enrolled in tech prep programs in eight regions across the nation. The study reports on their demographics, college readiness risk indicators, vocational interests, and performance as a function of graduation requirements at their high schools. The researchers reported no differences between participants and non-participants of tech prep programs with regard to college enrollment rates and percentage of students completing a degree or certificate. 

Evaluation of a Multi-site Transition to Adulthood Program for Youth with Disabilities

This paper reports preliminary findings from the evaluation of the New York State Education Department’s Model Transition Program grants to sixty local education agencies aimed to improve post-secondary outcomes for youth with disabilities. Data were collected for more than 16,000 participants. This part of the evaluation aimed to describe the types of services provided and characteristics of the program participants. Results indicated that most of the students targeted by the program were male and enrolled in 11th and 12th grades.

The Impacts of Career-Technical Education on High School Completion and Labor Market Success

This report analyzes the effect of vocational education on high school students’ academic effort and graduation rates. International cross-section data showed that nations (e.g. graduation rates from upper secondary school in Europe, Australia and North America and the correlation with enrollment in career-tech programs) that enroll a large portion of high school students in vocational programs have higher attendance rates and high school completion rates.

NASA Langley Partners with VA STEAM Academy to Promote Education

NASA Langley Research Center and the Virginia Science Technology Engineering and Applied Mathematics (STEAM) Academy will partner in an effort to improve STEAM education in Virginia. As part of the partnership, NASA Langley will provide 10 mentors to Virginia STEAM Academy students and faculty, while Virginia STEAM students serve as student ambassadors to varying NASA Langley programs.

This brief provides an overview of the evolution of CTE in the U.S., reviews what CTE looks like in practice, and highlights issues CTE faces in the field that must be overcome for it to become an impactful and wide-reaching strategy for preparing students for postsecondary success.
