This report highlights the Successful Transitions and Retention Track (START) Program at Idaho State University. The START Program, which consists of three components (classroom instruction, career and personal counseling, and math/English tutoring), is aimed at providing holistic support to students in order to increase the retention of GED holders entering college. This report also discusses some positive preliminary results on START initiatives, and provides first steps for implementing a START program.
A survey administered by the Center on Education Policy at George Washington University found that K-12 and higher education officials in most states are collaborating to implement the Common Core State Standards. In addition, most states reported that colleges and universities have determined that the new math and literacy standards meet standards of college readiness. However, officials in 16 states reported that they have had major challenges in collaborating with higher education.
A group of community colleges in Tennessee have been working with local high schools to create math labs for high school students. The math labs are available to high school seniors who appear likely to be in need of remediation in college and are focused on preparing students for college math. Bill Haslam, the state's governor, provided $1.1 million to the project after hearing of its success - 25% of of 200 students at a remedial, dual enrollment group at Chattanooga State Community College had completed a credit-bearing college-level math course while still in high school.
This report describes the results of two independent panels of English Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics experts in adult education, community colleges, career education, and the military that were convened by MPR Associates to review the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). The report provides a set of college and career readiness standards for ELA and math for adult students, based on the CCSS. It also describes how adult educators can use the CCSS to develop or revise current standards.
The 2014 GED test will be computer-based and aligned to the Common Core State Standards. The revised test will measure whether students are college and career ready and will also test on the following subjects: reasoning through language arts, mathematical reasoning, science, and social studies.
Algebra Academy, a weeklong program that serves eighth grade students in Santa Cruz, Monterey, and San Benito counties in California, allows students to work with math professors and graduate students to improve their skills in algebra. The program is aimed at reducing students' need for remediation by providing them with an "algebra booster shot" and also tracks the students after their participation in the program.

This report from ACT examines academic factors indicative of first-year college success and retention for high school students, specifically underrepresented racial/ethnic minority and low-income students. The report finds that college readiness, core curriculum, and taking additional coursework in math and science are directly related to college success. This report also discusses factors that lead to lower college success rates and presents recommendations for narrowing achievement gaps.
A recent report released by Change the Equation and the National School Boards Association found that out of the District of Columbia and the forty-five states that have adopted the Common Core State Standards in mathematics, only eleven had graduation requirements that were fully aligned to the new standards.
