The Center for Law and Social Policy (CLASP) recently joined policy leaders in other organizations calling upon to call upon key stakeholders in our nation’s postsecondary education and workforce credentialing system to increase transparency, trust and portability in the credentialing marketplace.
Community colleges serve a huge variety of students: traditional and nontraditional, daytime and evening, part-time and full-time, those seeking short-term career-technical credentials, and others who intend to transfer to four-year colleges. To meet the wide-ranging needs of this unique student population, community colleges offer a complex array of programs and courses. When students enroll at community colleges they therefore face a broad range of course, program, and degree options that can be confusing or overwhelming.
On May 1, 2014, the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) in partnership with the Alliance for Excellent Education led a question and answer based conversation about the role of secondary school leaders in creating personalized learning environments that are sustainable and increase student achievement.
On a national scale, rural districts face a range of challenges: declining student enrollment, declining revenues, technological disadvantages, trouble recruiting and retaining quality teachers, long student commutes, and at the high school level, providing the general academic core curriculum while also offering robust career/technical education (CTE) and advanced academic options. These challenges likewise play out in dual enrollment opportunities in rural high schools.
The National Center for College & Career Transitions (NC3T) and the Drexel University School of Education co-hosted a Webinar on Tuesday, April 22, 2014, “The U.S. Labor Market and its Implications for CTE and Pathways”, which focused on U.S. labor market indicators of the success rate for Career Technical Education (CTE) programs. Dr. Bruce Levine, Assistant Clinical Professor and Director of the Drexel School of Education’s Educational Policy program, and Brett Pawlowski, Co-founder of NC3T, moderated the event.
Each year in the United States there are nearly half a million children and youth in foster care, and approximately 26,000 older foster youth will age out of the system annually. Only 20% of youth who transition out of foster care enroll in postsecondary education and less than 11% go on to earn a postsecondary credential.
