The College & Career Readiness & Success (CCRS) Center recently released a brief titled How Career and Technical Education Can Help Students Be College and Career Ready: A Primer. This brief examines the role of career and technical education (CTE) in preparing students for both college and the workforce in a changing postsecondary landscape.
The brief explains that CTE is an educational strategy designed to impart academic and employability skills by replacing vocational education with a series of highly rigorous sequenced programs of study that align to post-secondary education. The alignment of CTE courses with specific career pathways helps insure that skills taught are relevant to specific careers and that students see the applicability of what they are learning. In addition, CTE has been shown to reduce dropout rates and increase participation in postsecondary education. The brief also details the potential challenges in creating high-quality CTE pathways and provides a guidelines on addressing these challenges as well as resources for educators.
